Ephesians 5 - Young's Literal Translation with Greek
Law History Wisdom Prophets Gospels Acts Epistles Apocalyptic
Become, then, followers of God, as children beloved, | 1 γίνεσθε οὗν μιμηταὶ τοῦ θεοῦ, ὡς τέκνα ἀγαπητά,
and walk in love, as also the Christ did love us, and did give himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for an odour of a sweet smell, | 2 καὶ περιπατεῖτε ἐν ἀγάπῃ, καθὼς καὶ ὁ χριστὸς ἠγάπησεν ἡμᾶς καὶ παρέδωκεν ἑαυτὸν ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν προσφορὰν καὶ θυσίαν τῶ θεῶ εἰς ὀσμὴν εὐωδίας.
and whoredom, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as becometh saints; | 3 πορνεία δὲ καὶ ἀκαθαρσία πᾶσα ἢ πλεονεξία μηδὲ ὀνομαζέσθω ἐν ὑμῖν, καθὼς πρέπει ἁγίοις,
also filthiness, and foolish talking, or jesting, -- the things not fit -- but rather thanksgiving; | 4 καὶ αἰσχρότης καὶ μωρολογία ἢ εὐτραπελία, ἃ οὐκ ἀνῆκεν, ἀλλὰ μᾶλλον εὐχαριστία.
for this ye know, that every whoremonger, or unclean, or covetous person, who is an idolater, hath no inheritance in the reign of the Christ and God.
Let no one deceive you with vain words, for because of these things cometh the anger of God upon the sons of the disobedience, | 6 μηδεὶς ὑμᾶς ἀπατάτω κενοῖς λόγοις, διὰ ταῦτα γὰρ ἔρχεται ἡ ὀργὴ τοῦ θεοῦ ἐπὶ τοὺς υἱοὺς τῆς ἀπειθείας.
become not, then, partakers with them, | 7 μὴ οὗν γίνεσθε συμμέτοχοι αὐτῶν·
for ye were once darkness, and now light in the Lord; as children of light walk ye, | 8 ἦτε γάρ ποτε σκότος, νῦν δὲ φῶς ἐν κυρίῳ· ὡς τέκνα φωτὸς περιπατεῖτε
for the fruit of the Spirit `is' in all goodness, and righteousness, and truth, | 9 _ ὁ γὰρ καρπὸς τοῦ φωτὸς ἐν πάσῃ ἀγαθωσύνῃ καὶ δικαιοσύνῃ καὶ ἀληθείᾳ _
proving what is well-pleasing to the Lord, | 10 δοκιμάζοντες τί ἐστιν εὐάρεστον τῶ κυρίῳ·
and have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of the darkness and rather even convict, | 11 καὶ μὴ συγκοινωνεῖτε τοῖς ἔργοις τοῖς ἀκάρποις τοῦ σκότους, μᾶλλον δὲ καὶ ἐλέγχετε,
for the things in secret done by them it is a shame even to speak of, | 12 τὰ γὰρ κρυφῇ γινόμενα ὑπ᾽ αὐτῶν αἰσχρόν ἐστιν καὶ λέγειν·
and all the things reproved by the light are manifested, for everything that is manifested is light; | 13 τὰ δὲ πάντα ἐλεγχόμενα ὑπὸ τοῦ φωτὸς φανεροῦται,
wherefore he saith, `Arouse thyself, thou who art sleeping, and arise out of the dead, and the Christ shall shine upon thee.'
See, then, how exactly ye walk, not as unwise, but as wise, | 15 βλέπετε οὗν ἀκριβῶς πῶς περιπατεῖτε, μὴ ὡς ἄσοφοι ἀλλ᾽ ὡς σοφοί,
redeeming the time, because the days are evil; | 16 ἐξαγοραζόμενοι τὸν καιρόν, ὅτι αἱ ἡμέραι πονηραί εἰσιν.
because of this become not fools, but -- understanding what `is' the will of the Lord, | 17 διὰ τοῦτο μὴ γίνεσθε ἄφρονες, ἀλλὰ συνίετε τί τὸ θέλημα τοῦ κυρίου.
and be not drunk with wine, in which is dissoluteness, but be filled in the Spirit, | 18 καὶ μὴ μεθύσκεσθε οἴνῳ, ἐν ᾧ ἐστιν ἀσωτία, ἀλλὰ πληροῦσθε ἐν πνεύματι,
speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, | 19 λαλοῦντες ἑαυτοῖς [ἐν] ψαλμοῖς καὶ ὕμνοις καὶ ᾠδαῖς πνευματικαῖς, ᾄδοντες καὶ ψάλλοντες τῇ καρδίᾳ ὑμῶν τῶ κυρίῳ,
giving thanks always for all things, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to the God and Father; | 20 εὐχαριστοῦντες πάντοτε ὑπὲρ πάντων ἐν ὀνόματι τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν ἰησοῦ χριστοῦ τῶ θεῶ καὶ πατρί,
subjecting yourselves to one another in the fear of God.
The wives! to your own husbands subject yourselves, as to the Lord, | 22 αἱ γυναῖκες τοῖς ἰδίοις ἀνδράσιν ὡς τῶ κυρίῳ,
because the husband is head of the wife, as also the Christ `is' head of the assembly, and he is saviour of the body, | 23 ὅτι ἀνήρ ἐστιν κεφαλὴ τῆς γυναικὸς ὡς καὶ ὁ χριστὸς κεφαλὴ τῆς ἐκκλησίας, αὐτὸς σωτὴρ τοῦ σώματος.
but even as the assembly is subject to Christ, so also `are' the wives to their own husbands in everything.
The husbands! love your own wives, as also the Christ did love the assembly, and did give himself for it, | 25 οἱ ἄνδρες, ἀγαπᾶτε τὰς γυναῖκας, καθὼς καὶ ὁ χριστὸς ἠγάπησεν τὴν ἐκκλησίαν καὶ ἑαυτὸν παρέδωκεν ὑπὲρ αὐτῆς,
that he might sanctify it, having cleansed `it' with the bathing of the water in the saying, | 26 ἵνα αὐτὴν ἁγιάσῃ καθαρίσας τῶ λουτρῶ τοῦ ὕδατος ἐν ῥήματι,
that he might present it to himself the assembly in glory, not having spot or wrinkle, or any of such things, but that it may be holy and unblemished; | 27 ἵνα παραστήσῃ αὐτὸς ἑαυτῶ ἔνδοξον τὴν ἐκκλησίαν, μὴ ἔχουσαν σπίλον ἢ ῥυτίδα ἤ τι τῶν τοιούτων, ἀλλ᾽ ἵνα ᾖ ἁγία καὶ ἄμωμος.
so ought the husbands to love their own wives as their own bodies: he who is loving his own wife -- himself he doth love; | 28 οὕτως ὀφείλουσιν [καὶ] οἱ ἄνδρες ἀγαπᾶν τὰς ἑαυτῶν γυναῖκας ὡς τὰ ἑαυτῶν σώματα.
for no one ever his own flesh did hate, but doth nourish and cherish it, as also the Lord -- the assembly, | 29 οὐδεὶς γάρ ποτε τὴν ἑαυτοῦ σάρκα ἐμίσησεν, ἀλλὰ ἐκτρέφει καὶ θάλπει αὐτήν, καθὼς καὶ ὁ χριστὸς τὴν ἐκκλησίαν,
because members we are of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones; | 30 ὅτι μέλη ἐσμὲν τοῦ σώματος αὐτοῦ.
`for this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined to his wife, and they shall be -- the two -- for one flesh;' | 31 ἀντὶ τούτου καταλείψει ἄνθρωπος [τὸν] πατέρα καὶ [τὴν] μητέρα καὶ προσκολληθήσεται πρὸς τὴν γυναῖκα αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἔσονται οἱ δύο εἰς σάρκα μίαν.
this secret is great, and I speak in regard to Christ and to the assembly; | 32 τὸ μυστήριον τοῦτο μέγα ἐστίν, ἐγὼ δὲ λέγω εἰς χριστὸν καὶ εἰς τὴν ἐκκλησίαν.
but ye also, every one in particular -- let each his own wife so love as himself, and the wife -- that she may reverence the husband.
